Employee Spotlight: Mike Doorly

Dec 19

At Chubb Hotel and Conference Center we work around the clock to make sure every guest has a quality experience. The secret to our wonderful service is our dedicated staff who make their job not only their business, but their pleasure.

We decided to sit down with one of those hard working employees to see what they think about working at Chubb Hotel. Today we talked with our very own Assistant Chief Engineer, Mike Doorly.

Q: How’d you end up at Chubb Hotel and Conference Center?

Mike Doorly: I heard about a job opening for a Conference Aid position back in 1993, it entailed setting up and cleaning conference rooms for meetings. I was hired and within two years moved onto the Maintenance staff. Through that experience I learned a new trade and eventually worked my way up to my current position as the Assistant Chief Engineer.

Q: What does a day in the life of Mike Doorly look like?

MD: I start my day at 6 a.m., review work with my manager, and then touch base with my staff. A typical Mike Doorly day consists of what I call “putting out fires” – helping out wherever I’m needed in anything from equipment repairs to jumpstarting a guest’s car battery.

In between, I’m answering calls to adjust the temperature in public areas and meeting spaces, working on maintenance projects with my team, and attending the occasional meeting. After a long day I head home to spend time with my wife and three kids — sometimes putting out more “fires”.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?

MD: I enjoy being able to work with my hands on different projects. I have an interest in how things function and like to keep busy. I also love getting to work with different people in different departments throughout the day.

Q: What is the most interesting/surprising/funniest thing that has happened to you on the job?

MD: Trying to motivate an eight-point buck, which is a pretty good sized deer, to move away from the grounds near our ballroom. We were successful in persuading him to walk to safety into the nearby woods.

Q: What is your favorite overlooked/little known place in the Chubb Hotel and Conference Center or on the grounds?

MD: My favorite place is the roof, sometimes you need to take a break and get some fresh air. Between the quietness and the some of the best scenery around, it’s an enjoyable place for me.

Q: What is something your coworkers may not know about you?

MD: I like to ride my road bike for exercise and am looking to do a charity ride soon. I also enjoy playing indoor soccer whenever I have time.

Q: What is your favorite event memory?

MD: We hosted a Fundraising event for The First Tee which included a visit from former President George W. Bush. The maintenance team was called upon to accommodate several unusual requests like adding power to the event tent, building a ramp to cover an area that had been soaked with rain a few days prior, supporting the requirements for a field catering tent and being on hand to support any last minute details that came up during the event.
